UPSC ESE

UPSC conducts the engineering services examination for the recruitment of various posts of engineering departments of Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology, Central Public Works Department, Ministry of Railways, Geological Survey of India, Military Engineer Services and in many others. Candidates, who are a graduate in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, can apply for the UPSE ESE  by submitting an online application form. Recruitment to all the Services/Posts will be made on the basis of Pre, Mains Exam, and interview.

Eligibility Criteria for UPSC ESE

The ESE Eligibility criteria have been given in the following points:

  • All Indian citizens are eligible to apply for the UPSC ESE
  • Candidate must be holding an engineering degree/diploma from a recognized university or Institute.
  • The age of the applicants must not be less than 21 years and more than 30 years.
  • Candidates of the reserved category will be offered relaxation in the upper age.
  • The age relaxation in the upper age will be 3 years for OBC candidates and 5 years for the SC and ST candidates.
  • Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards set by UPSC for the Engineering Services Examination.

UPSC ESE Application Form

Candidates need to fill and submit the ESE Application Form as according to the details given below in the points:

  • The UPSC ESE application form will be available on the official website of UPSC.
  • The official website of UPSC is ‘www.upsc.gov.in’.
  • Candidates need to provide all the details in the ESE application form for the Pre exam.
  • After qualifying the ESE Pre exam, candidates will be required to fill the detailed application form (DAF) for the ESE mains Exam.
  • Moreover, the application fee of Rs.200/‐ must be paid by the candidates through prescribed modes.

Application fee details

All the applicants (excepting Female/SC/ST/ PH who are exempted from application fee payment) are needed to pay a fee of Rs. 200/‐ either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI via cash or via using net banking facility   of   State   Bank   of India

Exam Pattern

There will be 3 stages of the UPSC ESE exam. The details of the UPSC ESE Exam Pattern have been given the following points:

  • The first stage of the ESE will be the Preliminary examination.
  • The Engineering Services (Preliminary/Stage-I) Examination will be comprised of two objective type (multiple choices) question papers.
  • The weightage of the questions will be of 500 marks viz., 200 Marks for the Paper 1 and 300 marks for the Paper II.
  • The second stage of the examination will be the Mains Exam.
  • The ESE Mains will be of descriptive nature having 2 question papers.
  • The total marks for the Mains exam will be 600 viz., 300 marks for each question papers.
  • The final stage/Stage-III will be the Personality Test of 200 marks which must be qualified by the candidates.

Admit card

Candidates who would register successfully for the exam will be issued Admit card as per the prescribed schedule. Most likely, the UPSC ESE Preliminary exam Admit card will be released in the month of December. The admit card/hall ticket is the important document to bring to the exam centre on the day of entrance test. The UPSC IES e-admit card will comprise all the relevant details such as Name, roll number, exam centre name etc.

Cut off marks

The cut off marks for IES Preliminary exam will be released at the time of result announcement. Candidates can check the UPSC ESE cut off online by visiting the official website of conducting body. The cut off is different for all the papers. The UPSC IES cutoff will be decided after considering the following factors:

  • Number of seats available
  • Total number of students appeared for UPSC ESE
  • Previous year ESE cut off marks
  • The difficulty level of the UPSC engineering services exam
  • Average Percentage of passing
  • Marking Scheme for the year

Result

The authority will announce the IES Prelims Results most likely in the month of February. Only those students who clear the prelims exam will be able to proceed to the UPSC ESE Mains exam. Likewise, on the basis of mains exam a list will be prepared for shortlisted candidates to appear in Personal Interview.

Selection process

The UPSC ESE/ IES recruitment process will involve two-stages as discussed below:

  • Written Examination
  • Personal Interview

The written entrance test for UPSC Engineering services comprises two exams i.e. Preliminary and Mains. Candidates are required to qualify for IES Prelims exam as per the prescribed cut off marks in order to appear in UPSC ESE Mains Exam. Those who qualify the mains examination will be called for the Personal Interview session.
