M.G University Ph.D Admission: Applications will be invited by Mahatma Gandhi University (M.G.U) for admission to Phd courses through Written Aptitude Test (PhD WAT) for the academic session 2022-23. The Written Aptitude Test is conducted for all the candidates who want to apply for Ph.D. admission in the University Departments/ Schools/Inter University Centres and approved Research Centres.

Eligibility Criteria for M.G University Ph.D Admission

Aspirants need to satisfy prescribed eligibility conditions before applying admission to PhD course at M.G. University, Kerala. The required eligibility criteria are as follows:

  1. Applicants who have qualified the Post-Graduate examination in any stream of Mahatma Gandhi University or any other Universities recognized as eligible thereto, obtaining at least of 55% marks in the aggregate, are eligible to apply for the Written Aptitude Test.
  2. For candidates belonging to SC/ST category the minimum marks required for application is 50% in the aggregate in the PG Examination.
  3. Applicants awaiting results of their Post Graduation Examinations can also apply, but they will qualify the PG Degree on or before the scheduled date.
  4. All the applicants who want to apply for Ph.D. admission in the University Departments/Schools/ Inter University Centres and approved Research Centres apart from those who are let off have to appear for the Written Aptitude Test.

Exemption from the Written Aptitude Test will be given under the following conditions:

  • Candidates who have qualified in the GATE/SLET/ NET/ GPAT, JEST, RGNF or other entrances organized by such Government bodies as CSIR, UGC, ICMR/ ICAR
  • DST Women Scientist Awardees
  • Regular and permanent teachers from the University Departments and the Government/Aided Colleges/institutes affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University
  • Scientists from the Accredited R & D Institutions
  • INSPIRE/ KSCST/MANF Fellowship Awardees

M.G University Ph.D Application Form: How to apply?

  • Candidates can apply for WAT online. The application form will be available online through the official website of the Mahatma Gandhi University i.e. (www.mgu.ac.in) as per scheduled date.
  • Candidates have to pay an application fee of Rs.1000/- (Rs.500/- for candidates belonging to SC/ST category). The mode of payment of the application fee is Online only.
  • Fee once submitted will not be refunded under any situations.
  • Candidates should fill all mandatory fields completely.
  • Upload the required Documents
  • Candidates have to upload the scanned picture and signature as per given format.
  • Submit the duly filled Application form
  • Take the system Generated printout and send to university with all the relevant documents such as Self-attested photocopies of the PG Degree/ Provisional Certificate and the P.G. secured Mark list, Caste Certificate (in case applicable), Eligibility Certificate for candidates of Universities other than Mahatma Gandhi University etc.

Mode of Admission

Candidates would be provided admission into PhD programmes based on the following:

  • Written Admission Test (WAT)
  • Doctoral Interview

After qualifying the test you can apply for research in the respective year only.

Those have cleared the Written Aptitude Test with at least 50% marks and have applied for registration for PhD they will be invited to attend a Doctoral interview.

Candidates would be selected based on marks acquired by them in the Doctoral interview. Candidates who secured minimum 50% marks are recommended to register for PhD programme. This criterion is 45% for SC/St category candidates.

Who are Exempted from Written Aptitude Test?

Here is the category of candidates who are exempted from appearing in the Written Aptitude Test:

  • JRF (UGC/CSIR) awardees
  • MANF/RGNF/KSCSTE/INSPIRE Fellowship Awardees.
  • Scholars under Visweswaraya Ph.D. Scheme.
  • DST Women Scientist Awardees.
  • Candidates who have cleared NET/GATE/SLET/GPAT/JEST or other exams conducted by such Government bodies such as UGC, CSIR, ICAR, ICSSR and ICMR.
  • Scientists from the accredited R&D Institutions.
  • Scholars under Visweswaraya Ph.D. Scheme
  • UGC Teacher Fellows.
  • Scientists from the accredited R&D Institutions.
  • Regular and permanent teachers from the University Departments.
  • M.Phil. degree holders in all disciplines.
  • M.Tech./M.S./M.D./M.D.S. (Modern Medicine, Ayurveda, Ayush disciplines and Dentistry) degree holders (interdisciplinary research).
  • Regular and permanent teachers from the Government/Aided Colleges in the state.

Examination Pattern

The duration of Written Aptitude Test (WAT) for Ph.D. admission will be two hours. The exam has two parts as follows:

Part – A

This part will consist of a total of 50 objective type questions with four multiple choices for 50 marks. Each right answer will be rewarded with one mark.

Part –B

This part contains a total of 14 short answer questions. Out of which candidates have to answer 10 questions. Each right answer will be rewarded with 3 marks.

Period of Research

The minimum duration of the research would be 3 years including Course Work.

If you hold M.Phil., M.Sc.(by research), M.Ed., Master of Letters, M.D. and M.Tech degree then, the minimum research period would be two and a half years along with six months course work.

The utmost period of research would be 8 years for part time research scholars and 6 years for full time research scholars.

Candidates of following categories can get a relaxation of two years:

  • PwD category candidates having more than 40% disability.
  • Women category candidates registered for full time.

  1. I have qualified NET. Can I apply directly to the university. Will there be a separate notification for that or do I apply along with the students who qualified WAT. If I have to apply with WAT qualified students I will have to wait till their results are published in June or July right?
