The renaming came into effect in May 2013 with which the institute became as the non-affiliating research and teaching University for the women solely. Having the status of the very first Indian Women Technical Varsity, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology is the University focusing on the studies, management, research, technology and applied sciences. Established with an aim to promote the technical education among the female students in the nation, the university is one of the reputed colleges in the capital.
The Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology was the first state University of Delhi with a focus on the professional studies and the first constituent college of GGSIPU.
