Established in 1995 as a public rural University, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS), Kolkata is the 2nd university of its type in the country started its journey with the aim to meet the long standing requirements of the people to have a university devoted to teaching skills pertaining to the rural areas. The university was founded by an Act of the governmental council of the West Bengal government. The purpose of the university is to impart education, teaching and to conduct research in dairy sciences & fishery sciences and veterinary & animal sciences and also to serve the needs of the farming society of the state of West Bengal. The university has about 19 faculties under the Veterinary and Animal sciences section; it has four faculties under the Dairy Technology section & eight faculties in the fishery department.
