PMRF Scheme 2023- Prime Minister’s Research Fellows

To improve the quality of research carried out in the higher educational institutions of the country, the Prime Minister’s Research Fellows (PMRF) Scheme has been launched. The main aim behind this fellowship program is to attract potential candidates towards quality research that can bring development through innovation. All prestigious institutions offering science and/or technology degrees like all the IITs, all the IISERs, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, NITs and some other top Central Universities offer PMRF to the candidates who are pursuing or are admitted to their PhD programme.

Selection of the candidates for the PMRF scheme 2023 will be done through a rigorous selection process and their performance will be reviewed suitably through a national convention. Interested and eligible candidates can apply for PMRF through two different channels available. Channels for applying for the PMRF 2023 Scheme

Candidates can apply for the PMRF Scheme 2023 though any of these two channels given that they meet the eligibility criteria prescribed for them:

PMRF Scheme 2023 Eligibility Criteria

The candidates must satisfy all of the following criteria to be eligible for the PMRF Scheme 2023:

For Direct Entry Channel:

  • The applicants should have completed or pursuing the final year of bachelors or masters degree in Science and Technology streams from any of the recognized University in India.
  • A CGPA of 8.0 or above and a GATE score of 650 or above in the relevant subject is also required.
  • The GATE criterion is waived if the qualifying degree is from one of the centrally funded technical institutes.
  • GATE qualified candidates who have completed or pursuing M.Tech/ MS by research at one of the PMRF Granting Institutes with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 or above at the end of the first semester with a minimum of four courses are eligible too.
  • The candidate must get selected in the PhD programme in one the PMRF granting institutes.

For Lateral Entry Channel:

  • Interested candidates should be pursuing PhD in one of the PMRF granting institutions.
  • The candidate should have completed at most 12 months in the PhD programme if he/ she joined the programme with a Master’s degree or should have completed at most 24 months in the PhD programme if he/ she joined the PhD programme with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • He/ she should have completed at least four courses in the PhD programme with a CGPA/ CPI of 8.5 or above.

Application Process for Prime Minister’s Research Fellows Scheme 2023

  • The interested candidates can apply for the fellowship scheme by visiting the official website.
  • In the application form, the candidates will have to provide their personal and academic information.
  • Apart from this, details about the project that the candidates are undertaking or are going to undertake will also be asked in the form.
  • After providing the details as asked, the candidates can make submission of their application form online.
  • An application fee of Rs. 1000/- (expectedly) should also be submitted along with the application form.

PMRF 2023 Selection Process

The candidates will be selected for the fellowship award on the basis of parameters given below. However, the criterion of selection given below is not restricted and might include other parameters as well, depending on the decision of the selection committee.

For Direct Entry Channel:

  • Research exposure
  • Publication records
  • Performance in international academic competitions
  • Academic grades
  • Recommendation letters

For Lateral Entry Channel:

  • Strong research proposal
  • Publications record (due weightage will be given to publication in reputed journals/ conferences)
  • Academic grades

For direct entry candidates their performance in the interview conducted for admission to PMRF Granting Institutes will also be taken into account. For the lateral entry candidates, their performance in the PhD degree programme (for a period of 12-24 months as applicable) will be considered. The Institutes will upload the relevant information regarding the candidates’ performance on the PMRF web portal in view of their merit. These factors in fact play a major role in selection the candidates for the PMRF scheme.

Fellowship Reward Amount

The amount of fellowship that will be awarded to the candidates who get selected under the PMRF scheme are given below:
