UPSC IES/ISS Syllabus 2020

UPSC IES/ISS syllabus 2020 will be based on the subjects studied by a candidate in his/her graduation. Candidates should study for the exam strictly as per the syllabus prescribed by the authority. To score good marks in the exam, it is necessary for the candidates to prepare really well for the exam. There will be a total of six papers for each service i.e. IES and ISS.

Among those six papers, the syllabus of General English and General Studies will be common to all. Rest of the subjects will be composed of the topics covered under Economics and Statistics.  Selection of the candidates will be done according to their performance in the written exam as well as in the interview. Therefore, they should stick to the UPSC IES/ISS syllabus 2020 to obtain good marks in the exam.

Syllabus common to IES/ISS Examination

General English

In this paper, essay and passages will be given and the candidates have to answer the questions related to those. Other questions will be designed to test their understanding of English and workman-like use of words.

General Studies

This part of the exam will contain questions on the current events, general knowledge and other events of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects that can be expected from an educated person. Questions will be asked on Indian polity, History, Economics, Geography, Environment, etc.

Syllabus for Indian Economic Services Exam

General Economics-I: Theory of production, Theory of distribution, Theory of consumer demands, Welfare economics, Mathematical methods in economics, Statistical and econometric methods etc.

General Economics-II: Concept of National Income and Social Accounting, Economic Growth and Development, Economic thought, Theory of employment, Output, Money and Finance, Inflation,  Financial and Capital Market, International Economics, Balance of Payments, Global Institutions, etc.

General Economics-III: Environmental Economics, Industrial Economics, Public Finance, State, Market and Planning, etc.

Indian Economics: Federal Finance, Budgeting and Fiscal Policy, Agriculture and Rural Development Strategies, History of development and planning, Poverty, Unemployment and Human Development, India’s experience with Urbanization and Migration, Industry: Strategy of industrial development, Labour, Foreign trade, Money and Banking, Inflation, etc.

Syllabus for Indian Statistical Service Exam

Statistics-I (Objective): Probability, Numerical Analysis, Statistical Methods, Computer application and Data processing, etc.

Statistics-II (Objective): Linear Models, Statistical Inference and Hypothesis Testing, Official Statistics, etc.

Statistics-III (Descriptive): Sampling Techniques, Econometrics, Applied Statistics, etc.

Statistics-IV (Descriptive): Demography and Vital Statistics, Survival Analysis and Clinical Trial, Quality Control, Operations Research and Reliability, Multivariate Analysis, Design and Analysis of Experiments, Computing with C and R.
