UPSC Geologist & Geo-Scientist Eligibility Criteria

The Union Public Service Commission annually conducts the examination for recruitment for the post of geologist and geo-scientist. Candidates can apply for the examination through the official website of the UPSC. Before proceeding for the application form, it is important for them to go through the UPSC Geologist and Geo-Scientist eligibility criteria 2019 laid down by the commission.

To appear in the examination, candidates must qualify the necessary conditions for the recruitment as a geologist and geo-scientist. The UPSC geologist and geo-scientist eligibility criteria 2021 are compulsory for all the aspirants to fulfill. Ineligible candidates won’t be allowed to take the exam.

Here are the essential eligibility criteria that the aspirants must satisfy-

Nationality

A candidate must be either:

  • a Citizen of India, or
  • a subject of Nepal, or
  • a subject of Bhutan, or
  • a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. or
  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Age limit

Post Age Criteria
Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist The age of the candidate should fall between 21 years and 32 years as on 1st January 2019.
Jr. Hydrogeologist in Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources The age of the candidate must fall between 21 years and 35 years as on 1st January 2019.

 Age Relaxation

The category wise age-relaxation is given in the table-

Government Servants working in the group “A” services of Geological department, Survey of India department and Central Ground Water Board department. 7 years
SC/ST 5 years
OBC 3 years
J&K domiciled candidates living in the state from 1st January 1980 to 31st December 1989. 5 years
Defence Services Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area. 3 years
Ex-Servicemen including Commissioned

Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service.

5 years
Blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically handicapped persons. 10 years

Note: The Date of birth recorded in matriculation/Higher secondary examination or its equivalent certificate only will be considered as the proof of age.

Educational Qualification

For Geologist (Grade-A) in Geological Survey of India: Candidate should hold a master’s degree in Geological Science or Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resource management or Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Petroleum Exploration or Geochemistry or Geological Technology from a recognized university.

For Geophysicists (Grade-A) in Geological Survey of India: Candidates should have done M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or M.Sc. (Geophysics) or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or M.Sc (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a recognized university.

For Chemists (Grade-A) in Geological Survey of India: Candidates should have done M. Sc. in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry from a recognized university.

For Junior Hydrogeologist (Group-A) in Central Ground Water Board: Candidates should possess a Masters Degree in Geology or Applied Geology or Marine Geology from a recognized university.

Note:

  • Candidates possessing common qualification for Geologist and Jr. Hydrogeologist can apply for both the posts/categories.
  • Candidates appearing in the final year of the qualifying examination can also apply but they will be selected only on producing the proof of having passed the relevant qualifying examination at the time of document verification.

Physical standards

Candidates must be physically and medically fit as per the rules of the commission. Only those candidates will be selected provisionally who satisfy the physical and medical requirements as laid down by the commission in the examination notification.

After ensuring the UPSC Geologist and Geo-Scientist eligibility criteria 2021, candidates can apply for the exam via online mode. They need to register themselves for the exam first by providing their basic details such as mobile number, email id, name, etc. After successful registration, they will receive a registration number in the email id and phone number. The number should be used for filling the part-II of the application cum registration form.

The details in the form should be entered very carefully and the candidates should avoid filling multiple application forms. Candidates need to keep the scanned images (photograph and signature) ready to upload in the form in a proper format, size and dimension. Once the form is submitted, no change request will be entertained by the authority. Candidates must pay the required application fee for the exam or else their applications will be rejected by the commission.
