UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2022: UGC NET is an important exam for all those who wish to illustrate their eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Assistant Professor both. The exam is possible to be conducted in April 2022 and application form will release in March 2022. But all the aspirants first need to know the UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2022 before they move ahead with applying for this exam.

This article provides the details of the eligibility criteria for UGC NET and the candidates fulfilling these mentioned criteria can proceed with the application form submission.

UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2022

The following are the eligibility criteria for UGC NET and only the candidates fulfilling these criteria will be considered for the post of Assistant Professor or for fellowship award:

Age criteria:

For Junior Research Fellowship: The age of the candidate should not be more than 30 years. However, the following candidates will get a relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit:

  • OBC-NC, SC, ST, PWD, transgender category candidates
  • Candidates having research experience, limited to the period spent on research in the relevant subject of post-graduation degree
  • Candidates who have served in the armed forces subject to the length of service in the armed forces up to the first day of the month in which the concerned UGC-NET is to be held

3 years relaxation is given to the candidates with LLM degree.

For Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for applying for eligibility for Assistant Professor.

Educational criteria:

  • It is necessary for the candidates to pass their master’s degree examination (or equivalent) with a minimum of 55% marks from any university/ institution recognized by UGC.
  • The candidates appearing in the final year of their master’s degree (or equivalent) examination are also considered to be fulfilling the UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2022 given that such candidates will pass the exam with 55% marks within two years from the date of NET result. These candidates will only be granted provisional eligibility and those who do not pass the exam with required percentage will be treated as disqualified.
  • A relaxation of 5% in the qualifying marks is given to the candidates belonging to OBC-NC, SC, ST, PWD, transgender categories. This relaxation will also be applicable to Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed by the given date (irrespective of date of declaration of result).
  • The candidates are eligible to apply only for the subject that they have studied during their post-graduation. In case the same field is not available, the candidates can appear for the exam in a related subject.
  • Candidates having post-graduate diploma/ certificate awarded by Indian University/ Institute or foreign degree/ diploma/ certificate awarded by the foreign University/ institute should ensure the equivalence of their diploma/ degree/ certificate with Master’s degree of recognized Indian universities from Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.

Exemption from the UGC NET

  • The candidates who have passed the UGC/CSIR JRF examination prior to 1989 and the SLET qualified candidates will be exempted.
  • The candidates, who have cleared the States Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for eligibility for Assistant Professor held prior to 1st June 2002, are also exempted.
