UPSC ESE Syllabus 2022: Download Your Syllabus

UPSC ESE syllabus 2022 will be based on the subjects and topics the candidates have studied during their graduation. It is important for the candidates to prepare for the exam strictly as per the syllabus laid down by the commission. Naturally, the syllabus differs field-wise. Therefore, candidates should read their field-specific subjects. However, the syllabus for paper-I of general studies will be common to all irrespective of the field they’ve done their graduation into.

Candidates will be selected for different engineering services based on their performance in the examination. To fetch good marks, they must study according to the UPSC ESE syllabus 2022. The standard of papers in all the exams will be that of graduation level of an Indian University.

UPSC ESE Syllabus 2022

For Preliminary examination

General Studies and Engineering Aptitude: Engineering Aptitude covering Logical reasoning and Analytical ability, Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis, Basics of Project Management, Current issues of national and international importance relating to social, economic and industrial development, Basics of Energy and Environment: Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation, Climate Change, Environmental impact assessment, General Principles of Design, Drawing, Importance of Safety, Standards and Quality practices in production, construction, maintenance and services, Basics of Material Science and Engineering , Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools and their applications in Engineering such as networking, e-governance and technology-based education, and Ethics and values in Engineering profession.

Note: The technical subject i.e. paper-II will include the syllabus of mains examination but in an objective format.

For Mains examination

Syllabus for Civil Engineering

Paper-I: Solid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Building materials, Construction Practice, Design of Steel Structures, Design of Concrete and Masonry structures, Planning and Management.

Paper-II: Flow of Fluids, Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, Hydraulic Machines and Hydro Power, Environmental Engineering, Surveying and Geology, Geotechnical Engineering and Foundation Engineering, and Transportation Engineering.

Syllabus for Mechanical Engineering

Paper-I: Fluid mechanics, IC Engines, Refrigeration, and Air conditioning, Power Plant Engineering,  Thermodynamics and Heat transfer, Turbo Machinery,  and Renewable Sources of Energy.

Paper-II: Engineering Mechanics, Mechanisms and Machines, Industrial and Maintenance Engineering, Engineering Materials, Design of Machine Elements, Manufacturing, Mechatronics and Robotics.

Syllabus for Electrical Engineering

Paper-I: Engineering Mathematics, Electric Circuits and Fields, Computer Fundamentals, Electrical Materials, Electrical and Electronic Measurements, and Basic Electronics Engineering.

Paper-II: Analog and Digital Electronics, Power Systems, Control Systems, Systems and Signal Processing, Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, and Drives.

Syllabus for Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

Paper-I: Basic Electronics Engineering, Network Theory, Materials Science, Basic Electrical Engineering, Electronic Measurements and Instrumentation, Analog and Digital Circuits.

Paper-II: Analog and Digital Communication Systems, Computer Organization and Architecture, Control Systems, Electro Magnetics, Advanced Electronics Topics, Advanced Communication Topics.

Candidates should align their exam preparation with the UPSC ESE syllabus and the exam pattern prescribed by the commission to crack the exam. Here is the exam pattern for UPSC ESE exam-

Exam mode Offline (pen and paper-based)
Language English and Hindi (except for mains where the questions will be asked in English only)
Duration 3 hours for all papers (except paper-I of prelims which will be of 2 hours)
Type of questions Prelims: objective type questions

Mains: conventional type questions

Number of papers Each of the stages (prelims and mains) will have 2 papers.
Marking scheme Varies paper to paper
Negative marking One-third marks will be deducted for marking the incorrect answer
