UPSC CMS Syllabus 2022: Detailed Syllabus

UPSC Combined Medical Services (CMS) exam is an upcoming recruitment exam for the post of medical officer in different government organizations. The competition in this exam is expected to be quite stiff, so it is necessary that aspiring candidates understand the exam pattern and syllabus in order to prepare well.

The UPSC CMS  exam will be held in two parts i.e. Part 1 (Computer-based Exam) and Part 2 (Personality Test). The questions in computer based exam will be asked from various topics in the field of medicine and surgery. In this article, we are discussing UPSC CMS syllabus including complete detail of subjects and topics.

Detailed UPSC CMS Syllabus 2022

The UPSC CMS exam will be organized in two Parts as given below

  1. Part 1: Computer Based Test
  2. Part 2: Personality Test

UPSC CMS Syllabus 2022 (Computer Based Exam)

The Computer Based Test will be held in two Papers i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 will have questions from different subjects as given in the table below:

Syllabus of Paper 1

In paper 1 the questions will be asked from General Medicine and pediatrics subjects. Topics included in these two subjects are as follows

  1. General Medicine will include the following topics

Cardiology, Gastro-intestinal, Genito-Urinary, Respiratory diseases, Hematology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Infections/ Communicable Diseases (Virus, Rickets, Bacterial, Spirochetal, Protozoan, Metazoan, Fungus), Metabolic disorders, Nutrition/Growth, Musculoskelatal System, Diseases of the skin (Dermatology), General, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Snake bite, Common Poisoning, Critical Care Medicine, Tropical Medicine, Emphasis on medical procedures, Vitamin deficiency diseases, Patho physiological basis of diseases, Vaccines preventable diseases and Non vaccines preventable diseases and In psychiatry (Depression, psychosis, anxiety, bipolar, diseases and Schizoprenia)

  1. Paediatrics will include the following topics

Common childhood emergencies, Normal developmental milestones, Basic new born care, Immunization in children, Birth defects and counseling including autism, Accidents and poisonings in children, National programmes related to child health and Recognizing children with special needs and management.

Syllabus for Paper 2

In paper 2 the questions will be asked from Surgery, Gynaecology &obstetric and Preventive Social And Community Medicine subjects. Topics included in these three subjects are as follows

  1. Surgery (ENT, Ophthalmology, Traumatology and Orthopaedics) will include following topics:

General Surgery , Neuro Surgery, Urological Surgery , Otorhinolaryngology E.N.T, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic surgery, Thoracic surgery,  Traumatology, Anesthesiology, Shock patho-physiology and management, Fluid and electrolyte management in surgery, Wound healing, Medicolegal and ethical issues of surgery, Pre-operative and post operative care of surgical patients, Diagnosis and management of common surgical ailments

Note: The general surgery will include Wounds, Tumours, Infections, Head and neck, Cysts/sinuses, Blood vessels, Lymphatic, Alimentary tract (Developmental, Anus, Intestines, Stomach, Oesophagus), Abdominal injuries, Abdominal wall, Peritoneum, Spleen, Liver, Bile and Pancreas.

  1. GYNAECOLOGY & OBSTETRICS will include following topics:
    1. OBSTETRICS : Post-natal conditions, Intra-natal conditions, Ante-natal conditions and Management of normal labours or complicated labour
    2. GYNAECOLOGY: Questions on infections in genital tract, applied anatomy, displacement of the uterus, neoplasma in the genital tract, Normal delivery and safe delivery practices, Abortions, High risk pregnancy and management, Medicolegal examination in obgy and Gynae including Rape, Intra Uterine growth retardation, applied physiology of menstruation and fertilization
    3. FAMILY PLANNING: Medical Termination of Pregnancy, Conventional contraceptives, U.D. and oral pills, Operative procedure, sterilization and organization of programmes in the urban and rural surroundings. 
  1. Preventive Social And Community Medicine will include following topics:

Occupational Health, Non-communicable diseases, Nutrition and Health, Environmental Health, Communicable Diseases, Demography and Health Statistics, General Epidemiology, Health Administration and Planning, Concept of Health, Disease and Preventive Medicine, Social and Community Medicine, National Programmes, Maternal and Child Health, Medical Sociology and Health Education, International Health, Genetics and Health, Knowledge of maternal and child wellness, Ability to monitor national health programmes, Management of common health problems, Ability to recognize, investigate, report, plan and manage community health problems including malnutrition and emergencies.

UPSC CMS Syllabus 2022 (Personality Test)

The personality test/interview of UPSC CMS 2022 will be carrying 100 marks. This act as a supplement to the Computer Based exam and examiner will try and determine the following abilities of a candidate
