UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Exam Pattern

UPSC selects candidates for four posts through this Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Exam which are Geologists, Geophysicists, Chemists and Jr. Hydrogeologists.

Before applying for the CG&G Examination, candidates need to make sure about which category they are willing to apply for because UPSC takes the examination of all the candidates for the above posts separately and judges candidates area of expertise and knowledge in the specific subjects.

Through the examination pattern which has been provided below for all the candidates, the pattern of examination can be understood.

General English (Paper-I)

  • This question paper will be common for all the candidates regardless of the posts they have applied for.
  • This question paper will be taken to check the candidates’ general understanding in the English Language.
  • Topics will be given to the candidates to write an essay about any one of the given topics and other questions in this paper will be of general prospects in English language and grammar.
  • A time frame of 3 hours will be provided to the candidates to solve this question paper and weightage of the question paper will be of 100 marks.

Question Papers of ‘Geology’ for the posts of ‘Geologists’

  • There will be three question papers under this category. The candidates who want to apply for the post of Geologist will have to appear in three question papers of geology.
  • Total time duration for each of the question paper will be of 3 hours and maximum 200 marks will be allotted to the every question paper of Geology.
  • There will be a grand total of 700 marks of the written examination including the 100 marks of compulsory paper of General English and 600 marks of three question papers of Geology.

Question Papers of ‘Geophysics for the posts of ‘Geophysicists’

  • Except the compulsory question paper of General English there will be three question papers of Geophysics which all the applicants of Geophysicists will appear for.
  • Time duration will be same as it was for the question papers of Geology. In three hours candidates will have to submit the answer sheets to the examiner.
  • As for the Geologists’ post, candidates will be served the marks from a total of 700 marks in the written examination for the posts of Geophysicists.

Question Papers of ‘Chemistry’ for the posts of ‘Chemists’

  • In the same way as in the examination of above two categories, there will be three question papers of Chemistry for the posts of Chemists.
  • Total marks for each question paper will be 200 and thus grand total will be for the written examination will be 700 marks including the marks of the question paper of General English.
  • Candidates will be given a time limit of 3 hours to solve each of the question paper.

Question Papers of Hydrogeology for the posts of Jr. Hydrogeologists  

  • UPSC will select candidates for the posts of Junior Hydrogeologists through this examination.
  • In this examination, candidates who have applied for the post of Jr. Hydrogeologists will have to appear also for the first and second question papers of Geology which the aspirants of Geologists will appear in.
  • Their skill and expertise will be checked in their specific subject of Hydrogeology. The question paper of Hydrogeology will be of 200 marks to be solved in time duration of 3 hours.

Interview/Personality Test

A board or a team of scholars appointed by UPSC will judge the suitability of the candidates through personality test.

The total marks for the interview or the personality test is of 200 marks and candidates will be provided the marks in interview as per their communicative performance and subjective expertise before the board.
