Indian Army Rank and Salary of Commissioned Officers 2023

The highest rank officer in the Indian army is Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army (COAS). The officers are commissioned in the Indian Army through National Defense Academy (NDA) and IMA (Indian Military Academy). New officers who join the Indian Army are commissioned as Lieutenants. Later on, they get better ranks as per their year of service and performance. Let’s discuss the ranks of Commissioned Officers in the Indian Army with their salaries.

Salaries during NDA Training Period

  • After joining the NDA (National Defense Academy), a cadet doesn’t get any pocket money or salary. However, he needs to submit some amount for different purposes as explained below.
    • Pocket allowance for 5 months – Rs. 2000/-
    • For items such as clothing and equipment –  Rs. 3200/-
    • Incidental Expenditure during the first semester – Rs. 425/-
  • However, out of the above amounts, a Pocket allowance for five months and clothing and equipment expenditure will be refunded in case the financial aid is sanctioned to the cadet.

Salary at Indian Military Academy (IMA)

  • After NDA, once a cadet reaches the Indian Military Academy he starts earning Rs. 21000/- per month. This salary is also applicable to Air Force Academy and Naval Academy.
  • Actually, during IMA, a cadet is authorized to get a salary of Lieutenant. The rest of the amount is paid as an outstanding payment to the stipend.

  • Lieutenant
      • Description – This is the rank of a freshly recruited cadet from the Indian Military Academy. A GD soldier or other JCO/ OR can also apply for this post if they are graduates/ 12th pass.
      • Starting salary without allowances – Rs. 56, 100/-
      • Retirement Age – 52 years
      • Level of pay matrix – 10
  • Captain
      • Description – Those who have served at least 2 years as lieutenants are eligible to be a captain in the Indian Army.
      • Starting Salary without allowances –  Rs. 61, 300/-
      • Retirement Age – 52 years
      • Level of pay matrix – 10B
  • Major
      • Description – A person can become a Major in the Indian Army only if he has served for at least 6 years as an officer in the Indian Army.
