Candidates can get a rough idea on the IIT Joint Admission Test with the help of IIT JAM exam pattern 2024. The exam pattern constitutes the overall structure in which the exam will be framed. Through the JAM exam, candidates can get admission into different PG programmes such as M.Sc. (Two Years), Joint M.Sc. – Ph.D., M.Sc. – Ph.D. Dual Degree, and other Post-Bachelor Degree Programmes offered by various IITs. Every year lakhs of meritorious candidates take this exam but only a handful gets selected. Therefore, it is important for the applicants to know how to prepare for the exam keeping in mind the IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2024 and the syllabus prescribed for it.
IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2024
The IIT JAM exam will be conducted in seven subjects/test papers namely- Biological Sciences (BL), Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS) and Physics (PH). Applicants can choose to appear for either one or two of these test papers. There will be a facility for using the online virtual calculator in the exam hall. Therefore, students need not bring the calculator with them. Candidates will also be provided a separate scribble pad for the rough work.
The IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2024 is as follows-
- Exam Type: The exam will be based on CBT mode i.e. Computer Based Test.
- Exam Duration: The duration of the exam will be of Three (3) Hours.
- Medium: Questions in the exam will be asked in English language only.
- Total Questions: There will a total of 60 questions asked in the exam.
- Total Marks: The paper will be of 100 marks.
- Marking scheme:
For section A-
1/3rd marks will be deducted for each wrong answer of question carrying 1 mark
2/3rd marks will be deducted for wrong response of question carrying 2 marks.
However, there will be no negative/partial marking for section B and section C respectively.

Here is the syllabus prescribed by the authority for IIT JAM exam-
Biotechnology (BT): Physics (as per 10+2 level), Chemistry (as per 10+2+3 level), Mathematics (as per 10+2 level), and Biology (as per 10+2+3 level).
Biological Sciences (BL): Basics of Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Biophysics, Microbiology, Mathematical Sciences.
Mathematics (MA): Functions of Two or Three Real Variables, Sequences and Series of Real Numbers, Functions of One Real Variable, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Group Theory, Linear Algebra Real Analysis, Vector Calculus.
Chemistry (CY): Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry.
Physics (PH): Mathematical Methods, Oscillations, Waves and Optics, Mechanics and General Properties of Matter, Electricity and Magnetism, Kinetic theory, Devices and Electronics Thermodynamics, Modern Physics and Solid State Physics.
