IIM CAP 2021: Dates, Eligibility Criteria, Merit List

Certain IIMs conduct a Common Admission Process (CAP) for selection of CAT qualified candidates to their PGP program. The admission process is organized by the participating IIMs on rotational basis.Candidates who have cleared the CAT exam with required percentile will be considered for the WAT-PI round conducted under the common admission process. IIM CAP 2021 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet the following criteria to be eligible for participating in the IIM CAP 2021:

  • The applicants should have cleared the Common Admission Test in order to be eligible for the IIM CAP 2021.
  • Section-wise as well as overall percentile requirement must also be met by the candidates as decided by the authority.
  • Any other criteria if prescribed by the participating institutes must also be fulfilled by the candidates.
  • Details of the same can be found on the official website of each participating institutes.

Preparation of Merit List

  • A merit list of the candidates will be prepared by the authority on the basis of their CAT percentile score.
  • The list will be uploaded online on the official websites of participating IIMs and can be checked from there.
  • Candidates whose names appear in the list will be provided the option to select the CAP center of their choice and appear for CAP.
  • Rest process of selection of the candidates (such as personal appearance round (WAT & PI), document verification, etc) will be carried as per their names in the merit list.

IIM CAP Selection Process 2021

The candidates will be selected for admission to the participating IIMs on the basis of following three parameters:

  • CAT score: The candidates must obtain a valid score in Common Admission Test (CAT) to participate in the Common Admission Process of IIMs.
  • WAT & PI: Candidates who clear the CAT exam then need to appear for Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) round of weightage 6% and 15% respectively. Candidates need to obtain certain minimum scores in the WAT & PI to be considered for the merit list. These rounds will be collectively conducted under the Common Admission Process (CAP).
  • Profile: Factors like academic profile, work experience and diversity will contribute to this parameter. Profile of the candidates will also be considered for including them in the admission process.

Different weightage is given to the different parameters that might vary from one IIM to another.

IIM CAP Admission Process 2021

  • Candidates who clear the CAP process, their details will be sent to the participating institutes.
  • Such institutes will combine the CAP performance with other criteria such as academic profile, work experience, etc to shortlist the candidates for admission.
  • After shortlisting, the IIMs will grant admission offer to the candidates and the candidates need to accept the offer within stipulated time frame.
  • After accepting the offer, the candidates need to report to the respective institutes.
  • Rest formalities of admission such as payment of fees, submission of documents, etc as applicable will be carried out at the IIMs.

Important Documents

The following documents in original and photocopy should be carried by the candidates while reporting for both CAP and final admissions:

  • A copy of CAT scorecard
  • Mark sheets of X, XII and graduation (all semesters)
  • Caste certificate for reserved category candidates
  • Work experience certificate along with the salary slip
  • Copy of the form filled for the particular IIM
  • Reference letter (wherever applicable)


Question 1: How will I get the details of the CAP center allotted to me?

Answer:Details regarding the CAP center allotted to the candidates along with other important information will be communicated on the registered email id of the candidates.

Question 2: Does every IIM participate in the Common Admission Process (CAP)?

Answer:No. Only the IIMs located at Bodhgaya, Jammu, Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Trichy and Udaipur will participate in the Common Admission Process (CAP).

Question 3: What score do I need to obtain in the CAP or Personal Appearance round to be eligible for final admission?

Answer:There is no fixed score requirement for clearing the Personal Appearance round and it may vary from one institute to another.

Question 4: If I am selected for admission, do I need to make some kind of payment? Is it possible to get a refund on it?

Answer:Offer acceptance fee need to be submitted by the shortlisted candidates if they accept the admission offer made by the concerned IIMs. Those who want to withdraw the offer, that can do so within the given time limit. Offer acceptance fee of such candidate will be refunded after certain deductions.

Question 5: In which cities the Common Admission Process will be conducted?

Answer:The CAP 2021 is expected to be conducted in the following cities: New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. Choice for the same can be provided after the release of list of shortlisted candidates.
