GATE 2023: Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

GATE 2023 application form has been released on 30th August 2022. Till then, please follow the prescribed syllabus and keep your preparation ON. We’ll come up with the next update shortly.


The candidates who wish to pursue master’s or direct doctoral programs in engineering, technology, architecture and relevant branches of Science can apply for GATE 2023. The qualified candidates will also be eligible for employment in PSUs like Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL),  Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Power Grid
Corporation of India (PGCI). The exam is conducted jointly by IISc Bangalore and seven IITs on a rotation basis. The exam will be held for 25 different papers and the candidates can apply according to their choice and eligibility.

Who Will Conduct GATE 2023?

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (namely, IITs at Delhi, Bombay, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, and Madras) administers GATE exam. IIT Kanpur is most likely to conduct GATE exam in 2023. Please note GATE score is valid for three years from the date of the announcement of the results.

Changes in GATE 2023

New Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have completed 10+2+2 or 10+3+1 and currently in undergraduate 3rd year or higher years of study or graduated in any government recognized degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts.

No of Papers in GATE 2023

There will be 29 papers in GATE 2023. Candidates are allowed to appear for either one or maximum 2 papers in GATE exam 2023. The second paper must belong to the given set of combinations (as provided in information brochure) to be available this year subject to the availability of infrastructure and date. Therefore, some branches may not have second paper as an option.

GATE 2023 Notification

GATE 2023 notification is most likely to release by September 2022. However, this date is purely tentative in nature, the authority may release notification prior to this. Meanwhile, please go through some important information about GATE:

  1. GATE 2023 will be conducted for 29 subjects.
  2. Exams for all 29 papers will be held online. However, candidates will be allowed to access a virtual keypad for entering numerical answers.
  3. An applicant is permitted to appear only in ANY ONE paper of the GATE exam.
  4. Examinations will be held in forenoon and afternoon sessions.
  5. Candidates have to fill online application at official website of GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). We’ll provide the direct link shortly.
  6. Payment of application fees will be done through electronic mode only.
  7. Physical calculators, mobile phones and wristwatches are strictly prohibited in the exam hall.
  8. Biometric information (Photograph and Fingerprints) for randomly chosen candidates may be done before the exam starts.

GATE 2023 Eligibility Criteria

The following candidates are eligible to apply for GATE 2023:

  • Candidates who complete or will be in final semester of BE/ B.Tech/ B.Pharm/ B. Arch/ B.Sc (Research)/ BS or Integrated M.Sc/ Integrated BS-MS or M.Sc/ MA/ MCA degree in the year 2023 can apply.
  • Those in the 2nd/ 3rd/ 4th year or who complete Integrated ME/ M.Tech (Post-B.Sc) degree in the year 2023 will be eligible.
  • The applicants with Integrated ME/ M.Tech or Dual Degree (or in 4th/ 5th year in 2023) are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants who completed Section A or equivalent of Professional Society Examinations (equivalent to BE/ B.Tech/ B.Arch) will be eligible.

>>Use of GATE score

The candidates with a valid GATE score can apply for admissions in M.Tech courses. Apart from this, several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also consider GATE score for employment. Direct recruitment to Group A level posts in Central government will also be provided on the basis of GATE score.

GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS): How to Apply Online?

GOAPS provides an online interface to the candidate through which they can apply for the examination, pay the application fee, check the status of the application form, download admit card, view answers, marks & GATE score and download GATE score card.

Application Form

The candidates can register themselves for GATE 2023 using their name, email address, mobile number and choosing a password through GOAPS. Upon successful registration, enrolment id will be generated. The application form can then be filled using this enrolment id and chosen password.

To fill the application form, the candidates will have to provide their basic personal information, qualification details, address details, identity proof details, etc.

The candidates will also have to provide GATE paper and exam center choice in the application form.

Scanned copy of important documents such as photograph, signature, category certificate, PwD Certificate, Dyslexic Certificate and Eligibility Certificate will also be uploaded.

Duly-filled application form can then be submitted along with the prescribed application fee.

The application fee payment can be done via net banking/ debit card/ credit card.

GATE 2023 Exam Pattern

The exam pattern for GATE 2023 is given as:

  • Exam mode: Computer-based test
  • Exam medium: English
  • Exam duration: 3 hours
  • Type of questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions
  • Number of papers: 24 (candidates have to select any one)
  • Number of questions: 65
  • Total marks: 100 marks
  • Marking scheme: Some questions will carry 1 mark and rest 2 marks.
  • Negative marking: 1/3rd marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer in MCQs and no negative marking for NAT questions.

What is Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

The answer to the NAT question will be a signed real number. No choice will be given for such questions and the candidate will have to enter the answer through virtual keyboard. The answer can be integer or in decimal as well.

A list of the 29 papers for which GATE will be conducted is given below. The candidates are suggested to appear in any one paper related to their bachelor’s degree programme. However, they can also choose any other paper according to the eligibility of institution in which they wish to get admission/ employment.

Preparation Tips for GATE Exam

The candidates wishing to appear in GATE 2023 can have a look at some basic preparation strategy that can help them in getting better score:

  • Carefully select the paper you have to appear in the GATE exam and collect the relevant study material.
  • Make your basics strong. With this amount of time left in the exam, you can easily clear all your fundamental concepts. After clearing your basics, you can move towards complex topics.
  • Try to practice as much as you can. Solving previous years’ question papers are the best way to practice.
  • Make short notes of the topic you think as important. These short notes will be very helpful during revision.
  • Do not stress over exam preparation. A cool and relaxed mind can grasp things more than a stressed mind.

Ans: Yes, however, you should take paper following the discipline of your qualifying degree.


Ans: No, you can use one email ID for filling only one application form. The authority never suggests candidates to fill multiple application forms.


Ans: Candidates, who are looking concession in application fee, are only asked to upload category certificate. As far as the GATE 2023 examination is concerned, only SC/ST/PwD/women candidates are eligible for fee concession.


Ans: No, you don’t need to send hard copy of application form to the concerned authority. However, you should keep it safe for future reference.


Ans: Yes, it will be rejected.


Ans: The authority may release separate date for the same. However, please don’t commit error.

GATE 2023 Admit Card

The successfully registered candidates can download their GATE admit card only from GOAPS website. A printout of the admit card must be carried to the exam center in order to appear for the exam. A valid identity proof as the one mentioned in the application form must also be carried with the admit card. Please reach the exam centre within the prescribed timeline, otherwise, you may not be permitted to write the exam.

GATE 2023 Answer Key

Upon completion of exam, the authority will publish candidates’ response at the official website of GOAPS in downloadable format. Answer key for all the papers will be displayed at official website. Students are allowed to submit their contests on the answer keys provided for a given time period against a payment. Further, GATE final score will be released upon verification of examination papers. Qualified candidates will be able to access GATE scorecard at official website of GOAPS.

Result & Scorecard

  • The GATE result will be declared online and score card of the qualified candidates will also be released on GOAPS website.
  • The candidates can download the score card within the specified period from the website.
  • GATE score card will be valid for 3 years from the result declaration date.
