The Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai was set up in the year 1949, the first one after independence with a vision to stand as a contributor in the technical education in India. The university is also known by the name MIT, Chennai. Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai is famous by the fact that APJ Abdul Kalam who has been the president of India has also been a student of this institute. The institute collaborates with Anna University and is an autonomous university, the one amongst the 4 of India in the tie up. Foundation:
The founder of the Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai is C. Rajam who took the leap to start a self-financing institute in India for the first time. The institution was established in the year 1949 which later got merged with a constituent college of the Anna University.

The Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai is recognised as India’s first self-financing institute that was capable of introducing new dimensions as in the engineering courses and programmes. A variety of new programmes were introduced at MIT, Chennai which were meant for both undergraduates and the postgraduates.

Set up in 1949, it was initiated with a thought of technical experimentation in the hope to be later turning out to be an effective contributor of technical education in India. The institute took the initiative of introducing new courses in engineering such as aeronautical engineering, automobile engineering, instrumentation technology and electronics engineering. It also introduced postgraduate programmes in the field of mechatronics and avionics. The institute also plays home for the AU-KBC research centre. The motto of the university is “In the service of India”.
