Overview:

A proud member of the elite group of the IITs across the nation, the institute is no doubt a coveted one. The institute has been a perfect epitome of the higher technical education and basic and applied research since its inception in 1959. It was in 1956 when the German Government offered the technical assistance in the establishment of a Higher Technical Education Institute in the nation. The IIT Madras, or better known as IIT-M was the result of untiring efforts of the then education leaders and the Government of Germany.

Foundation:

Though the proposal of the technical assistance by the German Govt. came as early as 1956, the formal inauguration of the institute itself was done in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir who was the Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.

Following the inauguration the very first Indo – German agreement was established in the year of 1959, at Bonn, West Germany.

About the College:

Located in the city of Chennai (previously known as Madras), the institute is well connected from land and air. IITM is a residential college with approximately 550 faculty members, 1250 administrative and supportive staff and 8000 students. It has a self-contained campus which spans in about 250 hectares of beautiful wooded land of the South India.

Admission Procedure:

Admission Procedure at Indian Institute of Technology

The admissions in various disciplines in the IIT Madras will be done on the basis of the entrance exams which are held at various times during a year.

Undergraduate Admissions (B. Tech.):

The students have to undertake and pass the JEE Main as the qualifying exam for the JEE Advanced which is the entrance test for all the IITs including IIT Madras. JEE Main is conducted in offline as well as online modes, in the month of April every year. Candidates seeking admissions in IIT Madras have to first qualify the JEE Main and get included in the Top 1, 50, 000 candidates to be eligible for the JEE Advanced.

The final admissions in IIT Madras will be done on the basis of exam scores in JEE Advanced. The exam will have TWO papers. Each one will have THREE sections on Physics, Chemistry and Math and each one will have the duration of 3 hours. The question papers will be available in Hindi as well as English.

Postgraduate Admissions (M. Tech.):

The admissions in the post graduate programmes in IIT Madras will be done on the basis of GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The test is conducted by all the IITs and IISc Bangalore to choose the meritorious students who have a motivation as well as the aptitude for higher studies. The exam is conducted every year in the months of January and February.

M. Sc. Admissions:

The JAM or the Joint Admission Test for M. Sc. will be conducted for admissions in Post B. Sc, M. Sc and M. Sc, PHD dual degree courses in IIT Madras.

Humanities Admissions:

The admissions in Humanities and Social Sciences Courses will be done via the HSEE Exam. HSEE stands for Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination. The exam can be taken by all the candidates who have taken and passed their Class XII exam from INDIA. This unique programme was started in 2007 – 08 and is available at IIT Madras ONLY.

Imbibing round 100 modern laboratories and 16 academic departments, IIT Madras also offers advanced research centres for various disciplines of Pure Sciences and Engineering. The faculty is not only recognized at the national level but has earned the international repute with the constant urge to improve, innovate and excel in education.

There is a research park, a separate and fully functional body for Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research as well as a Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility at the IITM Campus. The students get exposure to various international colleges and institutes of repute via the International Student Exchange Programme.
