DBT JRF 2023: Application Form, Syllabus, Exam Pattern

Applications are invited from interested and eligible candidates to apply for the fellowship award offered for pursuing research in the field of biotechnology. The application form will be available in online mode and is expected to release in the month of May 2023. Selection of the candidates for granting the fellowship will be done on the basis of a test, Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET 2023). The test is expected to be held in the month of July 2023. This article provides complete details related to the DBT JRF 2023.

DBT JRF 2021 Important Highlights

Only Indian national candidates are eligible to apply for Biotechnology Eligibility Test and avail the fellowship.

Only after joining an institution/ university, the fellowship of the candidates will be activated.

For appearing in the test, candidates will be allowed to provide three exam centers of their choice in the application form.

Answer key of the eligibility test will be released and the candidates will be given the opportunity to submit their grievances against the same.

Award letter will not be issued to those candidates who fail to get their documents successfully verified.

DBT JRF Eligibility Criteria 2023

Age limit:

  • The maximum age of the candidates should not exceed 28 years as on last date of application.
  • A relaxation of 5 years will be given to the candidates belonging to the SC/ ST/ PWD/ female candidates and 3 years to OBC-NCL candidates.

Academic qualification:

  • Candidates with M.Sc/ M.Tech/ M.V.Sc/ Integrated BS-MS/ BE/ B.Tech in Biotechnology/ M.Sc/ M.Tech in Bio-Informatics or Computational Biology/ M.Sc in Life Science/ Bioscience/ Zoology/ Botany/ Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ Bio-Physics or equivalent degree are eligible.
  • Those admitted under DBT supported postgraduate teaching programs are also eligible to apply.
  • The applicants who will appear in the final year exam in the year 2021 can apply too.

Qualifying marks:

  • A minimum of 60% aggregate marks in the qualifying exam should be scored by the candidates belonging to general/ EWS/ OBC category.
  • For candidates of SC/ ST/ PWD category, the minimum aggregate marks should not be less than 55%.

DBT JRF 2023 Application Form

DBT JRF 2023 application form will be released online on the official website www.bcil.nic.in. The candidates who wish to appear for the eligibility test should submit their application form in time.

  • Providing details like name, date of birth, email address, mobile umber, etc, the candidates will have to register themselves.
  • After successful registration, user id and password will be generated using which the candidates can obtain the application form.
  • In the application form, the candidates will have to provide the rest personal details and details related to qualifying exam.
  • Scanned copies of candidates’ signature, photograph, birth certificate, qualifying marks certificate, caste certificate and PWD certificate should also be uploaded in the application form.
  • After providing all the information asked in the application form, the candidates can make final form submission.
  • The candidates are advised to take a photocopy of the filled-in application before making final submission and keep it safe for future use.

Application fee:

  • To complete the process of admission, the applicants will also have to make payment of a prescribed amount of application fee.
  • Application fee for general/ OBC candidates will be Rs. 1000/- and for SC/ ST/ PWD candidates it will be Rs. 250/-.
  • Payment of the fee can be done online using net banking facility or debit card/ credit card.

DBT JRF 2023 Exam Pattern

The basic overview of the DBT JRF exam pattern 2023 is provided below:

  • Mode of exam: Online
  • Duration of exam: 3 hours
  • Number of questions: 200
  • Total marks: 300
  • Marking scheme: 3 marks will be given for every right answer.

  • Aptitude: Comprehension based questions, questions to assess non-verbal reasoning capacity, quantitative type questions, etc
  • General Biotechnology: Bio-molecular structure & function, Methods in Biotechnology, Organization of structure & functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, Cellular processes, Recombinant DNA Technology, etc

Section B:

  • Agricultural Biotechnology: Plant Biology, physiology, molecular biology and seed technology, Tissue Culture, Transgenic Technologies and Biotechnology, etc
  • Animal Biotechnology: Animal Physiology and Biochemistry, Histology and Embryology, Animal Parasitology, etc
  • Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering and Industrial Biotechnology: Introductory Mathematics, Engineering Principles, Thermodynamics in Biological Systems, etc
  • Bioinformatics & Computational Biology: Major Bioinformatics Resources, Database Searches, Sequence Analysis, Scoring Matrix, etc
  • Environmental Biotechnology: Basic Ecological Concepts and Principles, Environmental Pollution, Treatment of Typical Industrial Effluents, etc
  • Marine Biotechnology: Marine resources assessment, Oceanography, Microbial Assessment, Culture systems and hatchery techniques, etc

DBT JRF 2023 Admit Card

  • The admit card to appear in DBT JRF exam 2023 will be released on the official website www.bcil.nic.in.
  • Candidates should download the admit card and carry it to the exam center while reporting for the exam.
  • To download the admit card, the candidates need to provide their user id and password generated at the time of application.
  • Details of the test center and schedule will be communicated to the candidates through their admit card.
  • No candidates will be allowed to enter the examination hall without a valid admit card.

DBT JRF 2023 Result & Award

  • Result of the JRF exam will be released online and can be checked by the candidates using their user id and password.
  • Candidates will also be able to download their score card by logging in to their account.
  • Based on the marks obtained in the test, two categories of merit list will be prepared.
  • Shortlisted candidates need to send photocopy of important documents preferably attested by HOD/ gazetted officer or else self-attested to DBT JRF programme office.
  • Award letter will be issued after verification of all the eligibility documents within one year from the date of declaration of result.
  • Activation of the fellowship (upon joining an Institute/ University) is to be done within two years from the date of issue of award letter.

Important Documents

The following documents should be sent to the DBT JRF programme office for verification:

  • Copy of the BET 2023 Hall Ticket
  • Date of Birth Certificate (preferably SSC certificate)
  • Final/ consolidated mark sheet of the qualifying degree
  • Certificate of the qualifying degree
  • For SC/ ST/ PH candidates, proof for the category (preferably in English)
  • For OBC candidates, non-creamy layer certificate (preferably in English)
  • For EWS candidates, EWS certificate duly signed and stamped
  • A cover letter mentioning address for communication, phone number and email id

DBT JRF FAQs 2023

  1. Is there any way I can get a refund on my application fee?

Application fee once submitted is neither refundable nor transferable under any circumstances. However, if due to failed application fee submission, you made a repayment, the additional amount will be reversed to your account.

  1. What are the different available means for providing the fellowship to the shortlisted candidates?

Candidates who clear the BET will be categorized into category I and category II. Candidates under category I will be eligible to avail DBT JRF fellowship. Those under category II will be appointed in any DBT sponsored project and can avail fellowship from the project equivalent to NET/ GATE.

  1. What if I face any issues related to DBT JRF application process?
