Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery(BUMS)

The Unani medicine system is one of the ancient traditional medicine system practiced in Mughal India, Muslim Culture in South Asia and modern day Central Asia. It was originated from the Greek by the all-time great physician “Hippocrates”, and that is why the researchers affirm that the Unani medicinal branch has around 6,000 years of eternal tradition.

Unani medicine is also known as the “Hikmat” and “Unani Tibb Medicine.” The Greek origin Unani Medicine is still visible in its four humours (a traditional Indian medicinal system followed by Indians, Greeks, Physicians, and Philosophers): Phlegm (Balgham), Blood (Dam), Yellow bile (Ṣafrā’) and Black bile (Saudā’). After the Ayurveda, Unani is known as one of the highly demanding traditional medicines across the world, mainly influenced by the people in the countries such as India and China.  In India, Unani is known as the fourth populous medication system after Allopathic, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic system.

Use of Unani

Every Medicine was developed for curing some kinds of diseases. Unani was developed to cure the diseases such as Eczema, Vitiligo, Leucoderma, Acute and chronic diseases, Rheumatoid, Arthritis, Psoriasis, Bronchial Asthma, Jaundice and Filariasis.

About B.U.M.S

Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S) is a basic level degree course about the studies and practice of Unani Medicine and Surgery.  One who attended and passed out B.U.M.S can become Hakim Doctor (Short name of a physician or a General practitioner of herbal medicine, specialized in Unani Medicinal Practice). The total duration of B.U.M.S will be 5.5 years, comprises of 4.5 year academic secession with 1-year compulsory internship programme. There are many best institutes in India offering the Unani courses. A complete list regarding that is given at the end of this post.


A pass in qualifying examination (i.e. 10+2) and studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology and obtained 50% marks individually are eligible to join B.U.M.S Course. Meanwhile, there’s also another condition that the candidates who studied language Urdu in 12th class or having perfect proficiency in the Urdu Language will get high preference in the admission.

The leading B.U.M.S course offering institutes are providing its admissions to the candidates on the basis of Entrance exam scores. In India, The education, Certification and Training of Unani education is monitored by Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), which is a statutory body under The Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. The candidates who are applying for B.U.M.S must have at least 17 years as on the time for applying the participation.

B.U.M.S. course comprise with the subjects such as- Regimental therapy (llaj -bit- Tadbeer), Venesection, Cupping, Diaphoresis, Turkish bath, Cauterization, Purging, Exercise, Emesis, Leeching, Surgery (Jarahat), Dietotherapy (llaj-bit-Ghiza), Cupping, Pharmacotherapy (llaj-bit-Dawa), Diuresis, and Massage.

Career and Salary

There are diverse of career options for the candidates who did BUMS. Professionally, one who having the BUMS degree is called as a Hakeem (Doctor). He can work in the job roles including medical representative, Lecturer, Pharmacist, Public health specialist, Spa Director or as a doctor in Medical or Private Firm. The candidates who decided to study further after BUMS can study its related Post-Graduations and Doctoral level courses such as Post Graduate Diploma in Unani Medicine and Surgery, Master of Medicine in Unani and Doctor of Medicine (Unani).

Salary: A fresher level candidate can expect the salary ranging from Rs. 2 La to Rs. 3 La PA, while the candidates with 3 year to 5 year work experience can expect annual salary ranging between Rs 3 la to 5 La.
