Assam University is a teaching-cum-affiliating University which was established in 1989 through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989. The university has become the centre of learning since its inception. Assam University was brought into being in order to give superior attention to the enhancement of the societal and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the state along with the intellectual, academic and cultural development.The University has sixteen Schools which offer various courses in the all major disciplines. There are almost 35 Departments under these Sixteen Schools where candidates can take admission to pursue the desired programme.

The University is located in South Assam near the border line of Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland in the Barak valley as the Barak river flows across this region. The Barak valley is filled with the rich tradition of art, literature, culture and education. Candidates, who have qualified the TDC (Science) examination with at least 45% marks in Major/Honours or Pass course in Anthropology, Geology, Zoology, Botany, Life Science, Ecology, Environmental Biology, Environmental Science, or Geography, will be deemed eligible for admission.
