Nationality: Only Indian Citizens are allowed to take the exam.

Educational Qualification

Qualifying Examination: A candidate must possess a full time LLB degree from an institution recognized by the Bar Council of India.

Minimum Marks: No minimum marks required

Number of Attempts: No restriction on the number of attempts.

Important Note:

  • Candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degree in LL.B after 1st July 2011 onwards can apply irrespective of their enrollment for more than two years as an advocate on a State Bar Council.
  • Reserved category candidates will have to upload their category certificate while filling the application form.
  • Acquiring a Degree in LLB is not sufficient to practice law in the country. However, a candidate needs a “certificate of practice” given by BCI to actually exercise the law.

No. The examination notification only applies to students graduating from academic year 2011 onwards. If your law degree was awarded prior to 2011, there is no requirement to appear for the AIBE in order to qualify to practice law in India.

  1. I am an advocate enrolled with a State Bar Council in 2006 and am currently practicing before the district court. Do I have to appear for the AIBE?

No. If your law degree was awarded prior to 2011, there is no need to appear for the AIBE to qualify to practice law in India.

  1. I graduated from an Indian law school in 2009 and am completing my Ll.M. overseas. I plan to come back to India and practice law. Do I have to appear for AIBE 2021?

No, you don’t need to appear for AIBE. However, for practicing as an advocate you will need to contact the State Bar Council that you wish to enroll with.

  1. What is the minimum percentage to be achieved in the final year of law school to be eligible to appear for the AIBE 2021?

There is no minimum percentage required for AIBE. However, you may appear for the AIBE only if you have secured the minimum percentage for graduation and other requirements for graduation prescribed by the University you are studying at.

Enrolment with the respective State Bar Council is mandatory to appear for the AIBE (possible only after passing the required courses in a law school, under the Bar Council of India Rules).
